True Detective -luoja Nic Pizzolatto kritisoi jo aiemmin Issa Lópezin tekemää sarjan neljättä kautta, True Detective: Night Countrya. López kirjoitti vastineen kärttyiselle Pizzolattolle.
Nyt Pizzolatto on julkaissut Instagram-tarinoissaan pelkkiä negatiivisia arvioita neljännen kauden viimeisestä jaksosta. Fanit sekä esimerkiksi NPR TV:n kriitikko Eric Deggans ottivat sarjan entisen vetäjän negatiivisesti värittyneet julkaisut hampaisiinsa.
Deggans esimerkiksi kirjoitti ”neljännen kauden olleen niin surkea, että siitä tuli sarjan kaikkien aikojen katsotuin kausi.”
”Sen sijaan, että Nic Pizzolatto laskisi tienaamiaan rahojaan, ja kiittäisi Lopezia sarjan pelastamisesta, on hän päättänyt julistaa määrätietoisesti kaikille, kuinka huono häviäjä hän on.”
Pizzolatto on ilmeisesti katkerana siitä, ettei päässyt itse tekemään uutta kautta.

I applaud #IssaLopez for coming in and resurrecting the franchise after Nic Pizzolatto’s 2 unsuccessful attempts to recapture the 1st season’s glory. The season certainly wasn’t perfect but it was infinitely more engaging and stimulating than the last 2.
