Batman: The Killing Joke perustuu Alan Mooren ja Brian Bollandin Batman: Tappava pila -sarjakuvaan. Kyseessä on suhteellisen lyhyt sarjakuva, joten animaatioversioon on lisätty kohtauksia, jotta tarinasta tulisi elokuvan pituinen. Yksi lisätty kohtaus on Batmanin ja Batgirlin välinen seksikohtaus, joka on vihastuttanut faneja.
Monien fanien mielestä kohtaus on täysin turha, yököttävä ja mauton lisäys tarinaan.

Tappava pila on aikaisemminkin ollut kohun keskellä, vaikka tarinaa pidetäänkin klassikkona. Tarinassa Jokeri tekee Batgirlille kauheita asioita, joten koko sarjakuvaa on pidetty naisvihamielisenä.
Batman: The Killing Joke ilmestyy suoraan dvd:lle ja blu-raylle. Suomessa elokuvaa voi tilata ainakin Discshopin kautta.
