Petersin roolisuoritus on ilmiömäinen, joten eipä tämä varsinainen yllätys ole, mutta silti Twitterissä älähdettiin.
Sarjan luoja Ryan Murphy on saanut paljon kritiikkiä sarjastaan. Netflix joutui myös poistamaan LGBT-tägin sarjasta, koska Dahmer ei joidenkin ihmisten mielestä edusta seksuaalivähemmistöjä oikealla tavalla.
